Default Favorite Rayisms

What is your favorite saying of Ray Hunt?

Mine is "All I do is operate the life in the body, through the legs to the feet, through the mind" I had heard Ray say this multiple times but never fully understood it, until one day it clicked. I continue to find that I understand more of what he meant by this as I work with horses. The more I learn the more I understand what he meant with this simple phrase.

“There is no way that the horse will ever try to take advantage of you. He’s as honest and as truthful as anything you could ever work with. He has no ego that gets in his way. He has no pride that gets in his way. He doesn’t know what win or lose is. And those are the four things that get in the human’s way. It’s very sad. All the horse is trying to do is survive; he’s trying to make it. So I try to work with him like he was me, just like I hope he would work with me.”- Ray Hunt

I am a naturally competitive person and had to learn to understand how the horse operates before I could ever get him to do things willingly for me. This quote by Ray has always resonated with me.

I like "You need to know what happened before what happened, happened."

Default The slightest try

I am an unfortunate soul as I never got to ride with or meet Ray, but this is probably my favorite of the ones I have heard, "Recognize the smallest change, the slightest try.". I try to live by this, watching/feeling for the slightest effort & rewarding it. Not always successful, but I get better everyday.

I have a book of Ray quotes that he autographed for me and he simply wrote "Think" above his signature. That about sums up what Ray was trying to get people to do.

As much as it takes, as little as necessary.

What happened before what just happened happened?

There is a lot of wisdom in this post... I agree with you Kevin

I heard one that made me think today, the story goes like this.

At the end of the last day of a clinic a man said "Ray I have a question for you."

"Shoot," said Ray.

"I've been sitting here and observing," said the guy. "And I think I understand what's going on. Every day you put the class through the same series of simple stops, backups, and turns."

"Yes," said Ray.

"So here's my question then. When do you go on to the exercises meant for us 'intermediate' riders? Ray -- when do we ever leave Square One?"

And Ray sat there for a full minute before answering. Then he said,

"Son, you never leave Square One. You take it with you."
