Default Looking for special Mecate/reins made of some type of lacing?

I recently met a horseman from Utah who had a set of reins w/mecate for his snaffle headset. He got them at a tack store somewhere in UT. They are not horse hair or alpaca, that I can tell, nor are they yacht rope. Very light and with a lot of feel to them..he said he thought they were made out of some type of shoe lacing/strings....he lucked into them.....appreciate any information on here. Thank you
